THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE

HOMILY, THURSDAY OF THE 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Ecc 1:2-11, Luke 9:7-9.

THEME: THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE

Nothing is hidden under the sun. We can hide from others, but we cannot hide from ourselves and from God. The truth cannot be buried nor the voice of conscience be silent. Everyone has a conscience. Our conscience works differently at different times based on the choice we have made or the path we have chosen to tread. Above all, all is vanity which is not governed by a good conscience.

In our today’s gospel, we see how Herod, having heard of all that was done by Jesus, and he was perplexed, he said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.” However, the violence he committed against this herald of Jesus could not stop the work of the gospel. He heard the warning from John the Baptist, now, it is time to get the message from the Divine Saviour himself. Having heard of his deeds, his conscience could not rest until he sees him.

No sincere and genuine effort is wasted. The same person or society that rejects us today will one day seek to hear us again. All we need is not to be wearied, but persevere. Conscience, either individual or societal, has sober moments or moments when it can’t just but hear.

May the Good Lord open up our minds and hearts that we may be fully aware of his daily promptings. May none of our efforts be in vain in Jesus name. Amen.
