HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
Hebrew 10:32-39, Gospel mark 4:26-34
THEME: THE TEST OF OUR ENDURANCE
Our today’s readings are invitations to perseverance and endurance. Before we feel threatened by the mountain before us, it is better we think of how much distance we have covered to get to the foot of the mountain. More so, when our eyes are set on our goals, we will not be overcome by the seeming obstacles on our ways. None of our sweat is meant to be wasted. It is risky not to take risk. The courage to dare is the password to victory.
However, are implored in the letter to the Hebrew,
“Recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes, being publicly exposed to abuse and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated……….but we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and keep their souls.” Hebrew 10:32-39
This is a great message of admonition for those who lack the faith to persevere. We must not waste our efforts. Patience endurance is the breeding ground for steady expansion. Those who always want instant results, feel disappointed repeatedly. Whatever is not worth waiting for cannot possess lasting qualities.
“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how. The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear” Mark 4: 26-28
We should know that every good effort we make today is a great investment for tomorrow. All who belong to God are people of impact, because, not even a dot of our word will fall to the ground without producing commensurate fruit. Hence, we must not underrate our efforts. Therefore, we should strive always to bear good fruits no matter what we are passing through. Any negative thought or negative side to life will only bring us down, but our endurance and patience will yield us harvest of joy.
May the Lord increase our capacity to endure. May he accept all our efforts that they may be sown for an eternal harvest. Amen.
