HOMILY OF TUESDAY IN THE 22ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
1 Thessalonians 5:1-6,9-11, Luke 4:31-37
THEME: SILENCING THE DEMONS WITHIN THE CHURCH.
Jesus has absolute authority over every spirit. He does not need to appeal to any authority when he speaks. And he does not have the luxury of demonstrating his power while dealing with demons, because they are not equal to him. Whatever he says is what they do.
In today’s gospel, the Lord silent the demon who spoke through a man in the synagogue. He cast the demon out with a wave of command, though the demon affirmed him as the Holy one of God.
Jesus’s encounter with this man was in the synagogue and not in the street. This is simple evidence that our religious gathering oftentimes is replete with people with foul spirits, who still call on the name of the Lord or possibly hold important office in the church. We need to pray for discernment to figure them out and equally silent their activities.
As we continue to recognize the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives, families, and gatherings, may every evil spirit around us give way and may their activities be silenced through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
