ALL POWER BELONG TO GOD

142

HOMILY OF TUESDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR B

Zephaniah 3:1-2.9-13, Matthew 21:28-32.

In our today’s first reading, God, in prophet Zephaniah reprimands his people for their rebellion and false worship. He sent is warning to the cities of Moab, and Ammon, and the foundering world power, Assyria.

The message to the oppressing city is equally a message to all world powers or political leaders and the people who feed from bad governance. The Lord threatened to reduce the population of the people and leave the remnants of those who would recognize his kingship.

We often criticise bad government, yet we do not make the effort to speak the truth to the power that be. We rather prefer to join them simply because we cannot beat them.  We must understand that, any government or people that do not put God first in their affairs will always breed calamities.  Hence the Lord said,

Yes at that time, I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call on the name of the Lord and serve him with one accord. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, the daughter of my dispersed ones, shall bring my offering. On that day  you shall not be put to shame because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me, for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exult and tones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain. For I will leave in the midst of you a people humble and lowly” [Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13.]

Let us call on the name of the Lord, that he may heal our nations. Let us listen to his words so that he may lead us in his ways. He does not honour people who are rebellious.

May we enjoy the fate of those who trust and obey the Lord.  May we not perish as a result of our sins. When the Lord comes to settle his people, may he remember us through Christ our Lord. Amen
