Today, Jesus began his parable with an important question we tend to undermine in our Christian living. “Can one blind man guide another?” And then He went on admonishing his audience to remove the planks in their own eyes before removing the splinter from another person’s eyes.
NB:The planks and splinters are used to denote those things that Christianity abhors. (You can simply call them sins in their different categories)
Since we undermine the plank in our own eyes, removing the splinter in another’s eyes will be difficult.
That’s why the message of Christianity no longer makes meaning to the people we are trying to convert. The ones that followed us because they couldn’t see the planks in our eyes, we lead them into pitholes because we are blind too, while others refused to follow us because they can see the planks in our eyes better than we can see for ourselves.
We must remember that the message of Christ is, “Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.”
Some of us may be unconscious of the planks in our eyes, and so, we wouldn’t know to remove them, while some are conscious of the planks but would not want to remove them because we have become comfortable in living our Christian life with them. These are the types we refer to as ‘mechanized christians’ as christianity have only become for them a pattern, such as going to church every Sunday and morning masses during weekdays without regard for one’s inner disposition towards such practices.
In sum, the planks in our eyes make our faith ineffective and render our effort in converting others to be unproductive.
May God give us the grace to first remove the planks in our eyes so that we can see clearly to remove the splinters in the eyes of our neighbours. Amen.
