HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B 11TH OF OCTOBER 2024
1st reading : Galatians 3:7-14
Psalm 110:1-6
Gospel : Luke 11:15-26
“…When an unclean spirit goes out of a man it wanders through waterless country looking for a place to rest, and not finding one it says, “I will go back to the home I came from.” But on arrival, finding it swept and tidied, it then goes off and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set up house there, so that the man ends up by being worse than he was before.”
Many times, we have observed that there is a recurrence of demonic manipulation in the life of one who had been previously exorcised and delivered. In this case, we see the same entities at every prayer ground being delivered over and over again, and except the person stops attending prayers, he/she will still manifest the manipulation of evil spirits and will need to be delivered again.
Consequent to the above, we wonder why such occurrences are possible.
Two answers can be given to that;
Firstly, it is either the exorcism was not properly done previously.
The second reason is what we have in the gospel today. That is, the spirit which was expelled had returned with other wicked spirits because they found their host empty and clean for habitation.
Therefore, it is not enough to pray and exorcise someone. The demonic spirit must also be replaced with the Holy Spirit. In this way, it becomes difficult for the evil spirit to return because when it comes back, it will see that its former host is now filled with the Holy Spirit.
More so, the one who is exorcised must make an effort too, to keep the Holy Spirit active in his/her life. If not, a repossession by the demonic spirit can take place.
So, to avoid cases of demonic possession and repossession, we must take note that the exorcism is properly done and the demonic spirit is replaced with the Holy Spirit. And if, as a minister, you can’t guarantee this, always refer the victims to another minister and never let your pride drive you into conducting deliverance haphazardly to the detriment of the victims of the demonic possession.
