Dear friends in Christ, there is no privilege more than being a Christian. I don’t know if you have reflected over this in any way. That you have been given graces and fullness of grace.
In the first reading of today, the author of the letter to the Hebrews tells us that God is not so unjust so as to forget our good works. Sometimes, we may feel we are neglected and abandoned because of our misdeeds. But our God is actually not like that. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, what we received is fullness of grace. It is grace upon grace. Our God is not a wicked God. He remembers our struggles. Now, what do we need to do? We need to keep firm on the hope we have in him. We must not lose hope regardless of our situations of life.
Again, in the gospel reading, the Pharisees questioned Jesus why his disciples will eat from the heads of grains in the grainfields. Jesus reminds them of how David returning from war and was hungry ate from the showbread in the house of God which was only reserved for the priests. Grace makes the difference my dear friends. God is not seated waiting for our wrong deeds that he may judge us. He is loving and caring. He wants our well-being.
However, grace is not an avenue to continue to dwell in sin or misconduct. It should give us an avenue to meet God and experience Him. St Agnes whom we celebrate today suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian in Rome. This young girl, who was only 12 years old, was sent to a house of prostitution for being a Christian. Agnes maintained her virginity and sanctity until death, in 304, proclaiming her faith in the Lord with great heroism. She is famous with this saying “Christ made my soul beautiful with the jewels of grace and virtue. I belong to Him whom the angels serve.”
Dear friends, the grace of God we have received is to help us to belong to him.
Let us ask the merciful God to help us make use of the graces we have received judiciously all to the glory of his name.
The Lord be with you.
