HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

Daniel 3; 14-20.24-25.28, John 8:31-42.

THEME: TRUTH AND FREEDOM.

In a Godless society, speaking the truth or standing for the truth is like playing with fire. However, God does not play with those who do not trade with the truth. It is only the truth that can set us free.

In our today’s first reading, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abegnego, refused to bow to the golden image erected by Nebuchadnezzar. They did not find it funny, but at the end, God saved them from the fury of the wicked king. Their stout heart and firm stance for God finally caused a turnaround in the life of the king who has set them to be destroyed by a fiery furnace.

More so, in the Gospel, Jesus was disappointed in the Jews who sought to kill him for telling them the truth. Despite the fact that they were claiming to be sons of Abraham, they could not recognize the Saviour.

If you were Abraham’s children, you would do what Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which i heard from God; this is not what Abraham did. You do the work of your Father.” John 8:39-41

In a world where people prefer darkness to light, people tend to fight even with the last drop of their blood for a cause that is baseless. There have been many people who spend their days fighting God, thinking that they are fighting for God. Ignorance is a vision killer. Truth frees us from ignorance. We must not toil with  the truth, even if it questions our status in life.

May our faith be strong enough to contend with the powers that question our God, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
