THE WORST OF BLINDNESS, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua, CSSp

39

HOMILY OF MONDAY OF THE SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Genesis 4:1-15,25, Mark 8:11-13

THEME: THE WORST KIND OF BLINDNESS

QUOTES: The worst kind of blindness figuratively, is denial. It’s not merely the loss of sight.

The mark of excellence is aptly depicted in people who transform the ordinary into the phenomenal. This sign is also demonstrated in individuals who do seemingly difficult things effortlessly. They witness the testimonies of God daily and they savour every moment in an ocean of grace. This set of people will eternally be grateful because, they see the workings of God in their lives. God is epitomised in sanctity everywhere they are, both sacred (exalted) and as well as common (lowly) places.

Humans have failed to see and acknowledge the glory of God in simple things. Contrariwise to expectations, we live in a world where people detest simple solutions to difficult problems. Simplicity is rated beneath flamboyance. Such a society spurs people to seek the mysterious and embark on a search for rare things. History will be meaningless in this kind of world, because it will surely relegate a chunk of the beautiful past as obsolete.

Additionally, today’s gospel illustrates how Jesus sighed when the Pharisees were demanding signs from him as a confirmation of his divinity. They needed miracles to ascertain that God has come to live among them. They sought complicated evidences rather than sheer signals because their belief is deeply rooted in the understanding that God is not simple. This is the case of Elijah who was expecting God to appear like a wild fire but he eventually showed as a gentle breeze.

Our God is an extraordinary being and he is not distant from the world he has made. All creation bears his uniqueness. And all he has made are clear sign of his presence.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

King David said in the Psalms, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Ps. 19:1)

Dear beloved, we ought to reflect soberly for a moment in appreciation for the air we breathe, the gift of a good night sleep and the dawn of a new day. Seek no further for the Lord is close to us. We should always be conscious of his presence. He is a glorious God regardless of our plight.

May the Lord give us a clear vision so we could see his wonders around us. May we forever be grateful for every moment of grace we enjoy. Amen.
