HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF EASTER.

Saints Philip and James, Apostles – Feast

1 Corinthians 15:1-8, John 14:6-14

THEME: BRIDGE THE GAP

Philip and James were among the twelve apostles of Jesus. Philip was known for his straightforwardness and logical thinking, while James, also known as James the Less, was believed to have been a relation of Jesus. Both played important roles in spreading the teachings of Christianity and are celebrated as saints in Christendom.

According to tradition, Philip was martyred in Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern day Turkey) by crucifixion or by being hung upside down on a cross. James, on the other hand, was believed to have been stoned to death in Jerusalem or beaten to death with a club in Egypt.

It is a mystery when the infinite takes up the form of the finite. Holiness does not give room for aloofness. God’s supremacy has no space for social distancing. He mingles with us in our ordinariness.

Philip was standing before Jesus asking, “Lord, let us see the Father and then we shall be satisfied.”

When we set pride aside, we will realise that our positions or status are not barriers to interpersonal relationships. Our greatness is not determined by who we relate with. Rather, it is a function of how we relate with people. Love knows no boundary.

We can break down our wall of defense. We can mingle with the lowly. If God could come to live among men, then he can come to us in ways we may not know. But when our heart is open, we will never miss any of his visits.

May humility be our garment. Amen.
