We are still in the euphoria of the celebration of Easter and today’s celebrations urges us to be witnesses to this truth of our redemption from death to life. Today our Lord Jesus arose from the tomb to show that He is above every limitations.
In the first reading from the acts of the apostles, we see Peter, the one who denied Jesus three times becoming now a witness to the resurrection of Jesus. Peter did show a lot of courage to do that despite the plots of the scribes and the Pharisees to void the authentication of Jesus’s resurrection from the dead. Peter addresses the household of Cornelius saying, “now we are those witnesses, we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name” (Acts 10:34,37-43).
To believe in Jesus is the first stage of freedom from sin. It is not enough to believe in Jesus, we must also practice what Jesus taught us to do by loving our neighbours as ourselves and to love God with all our hearts. While Jesus was on earth, he showed us numerous examples of to live with one another. Let us imitate him and worship God in sincerity of heart.
St Paul in the second reading urges us to look for the things that are in heaven, since we have been given a new citizenship through the death and resurrection of Jesus (Colossians 3:1-4). It is Jesus that rewards us with life after our earthly journey. Therefore, we must not go back to our former ways of life.
The gospel continues to recount the resurrection events, how the women, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb of Jesus early on a Sunday morning to anoint the body. They could not find the body of Jesus where it was kept and were frightened. But, an angel who had appeared to them said to them, “there is no need for you to be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said he would. Come and see the place where he lay, then go quickly and tell his disciples, “He has risen from the dead and now he is going before you to Galilee; it is there you will see him.” (John 20:1-9)
The women are said to be the first witnesses to Jesus’s resurrection. We are also witnesses to this wonderful experience. We ought to spread this good news of the new life in Christ to those we meet everyday.
If truly we are witnesses through the faith we professes, there must be an aura of the spark of light of Christ in us. Our lives must show that we are children of the light. We need to examine our lifestyles and correct anything in it that does not reflect the life of Christ in us. Peace be with you.
