BEING WATCHFUL

81

Engaging in profound reflection can help us to realize that we lack a solid basis for comparing ourselves to others. Each individual will be judged based on the extent of their own responsibilities. Given that our goals in life may not always align with those of others, it’s necessary that we exercise caution in order to avoid focusing on others and neglecting our own unique calling. We must be watchful of our direct calling.

Knowing our responsibility

The Lord said in the gospel narratives, “When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given him on trust, even more will be expected of him.”

Each is expected to be diligent in his or her own calling. Our preparedness will be measured based on how much attention we give to our unique calling. It will amount to fetching water with basket if we do not know our life call in the first place. We must discern it because our God-given niche has a special grace attached to it.

The Lord further said, “what sort of steward, then, is faithful and wise enough for the master to place him over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Happy that servant if his master’s arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you truly, he will place him over everything he owns.

Being watchful is proficiency.

Being watchful has something to do with mastery. It comes from knowing what we are cut out for, and we make ourselves proficient in it. Proficiency is mastery. Moreover, we cannot bloom where we are not planted. It is good to give priority to our primary duties in life. As Christians, our priority is to do the will of God anytime, any moment.

May the grace of God be enough for us. May we never be found wanting at our duty post. Amen.
