BLESSED ASSURANCE: THE BEATITUDES, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua, CSSp

66

HOMILY OF THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Zep 2:3; 3:12-13, 1 Cor 1:26-31, Mt 5:12a

THEME: BLESSED ASSURANCE: THE BEATITUDES

Christian race is not for the strong, but for those who choose to come under the canopy of God.

If it is by our own power, if it is by our own might, the world power or troubles will quench us. For those who take refuge in the Lord, there will ever be a cause to be courageous, because he keeps safe those who run to him.

Paul said in the second reading today, “Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong.”

The beatitudes are not pampering words from Jesus. Rather, they are invitations to raise our heads high amidst the troubles of life, because we have a God who will and can never disappoint.

However, our blessedness does not consist in pious moves or in our involvement in devotional activities. Rather, it is seen in our ability to face and endure the challenges of life with peacefulness for God’s sake. Jesus was moved to utter these words of consolations having seen the sorry state of the crowd.

Morever, we live in a generation where there are varying government policies capable of crippling people’s spiritual values. There are lot of violent and juicy offers that can erode our thirst for God’s values. It takes discipline to get off them for the higher life in God.

As a Christian  who really wants to remain on God’s side,

Are you poor in the spirit?

Are you mournful for any reason?

How meek are you?

Do you have hunger and thirst for righteousness?

Are you merciful?

How clean is your heart?

Are you a peace maker?

Have you been persecuted for the sake of righteousness?

Have you ever been insulted, persecuted, or suffered false accusation for Christ’s sake?

The Lord says,

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.

WHO IS SPEAKING?

Who is speaking,

Is that you Jesus?

Your voice so gentle,

Your voice consoling.

If you are the one

Speak on my Lord

If you are one,

Speak on my Lord. Amen.
