Futility of Seeking Attention

69

Homily of Saturday of the 30th Week in Ordinary Time Year, on the theme, futility of seeking attention” by Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp.

Today we celebrate the memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, the revered Bishop of Milan in the 16th century. He was a great figure who left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church. He was instrumental in implementing the reforms of the Council of Trent and worked tirelessly to combat corruption within the clergy. Known for his profound spirituality and dedication to pastoral care, he supported the education of priests and promoted the importance of the Eucharist. His legacy endures as a symbol of renewal and faith within the Church.

It is more honorable to be recognized by others than pushing ourselves for recognition. Attention seeking can kill our sense of reverence. People may hail us as we seek to gain prominence on the centre stage, they love those who do not look for cheap popularity.

In the gospel, Jesus took an exception to the pharisees who have a crave for exalted position.

To them he said,

When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.”

We earn respect. We do not command it. It feels nice when others recognize us. It is much better than trying to get recognition but not succeeding.

May the Lord lift us. may he announce us for his greater glory. Amen.
