God and the Choice of True Loyalty

293
Joshua 24:1-2,15-18, Ephesians 5:21-32, John 6:60-69

To truly appreciate the goodness of God, we must submit to Him wholeheartedly and remain faithful. Turning away from someone who has been committed to our well-being is counterproductive. When Joshua asked the Israelites whom they would serve, they responded:

“We have no intention of deserting the Lord and serving other gods! Was it not the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors out of the land of Egypt, the house of slavery, who worked great wonders before our eyes and preserved us throughout our journey among all the peoples we encountered? The Lord drove out all those nations before us, including the Amorites who lived in this land. We too will serve the Lord, for He is our God.”

The Israelites first recognized God as their Savior before acknowledging Him as their Creator. They saw His works and realized He deserved their worship for preserving their lives. This demonstrates that God’s role in their lives justified their loyalty and devotion.

However, we cannot have it both ways. Often, we pledge loyalty to gain something and then abandon our commitments once we achieve our goal. Such behavior inevitably leads to consequences. For instance, accepting bribes from politicians and voting for them despite knowing they are unsuitable can lead to frustration or suffering under their rule.

Our God does not seek loyalty through blessings. His favor in our lives is a testament to His role as our Father and Maker. He continues to care for all He has created. We must always recognize His place in our lives to fully enjoy the blessings of being in His presence.

Obedience to God should not be based solely on what we receive from Him. Understanding His ways can be challenging. Serving God is not always easy. A personal encounter with Him provides the confidence to remain steadfast. In the Gospel, many disciples left Jesus because they found His teachings hard to accept. Only the twelve stayed, and Jesus asked them, “What about you, do you want to leave too?” Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”

A step away from God is a leap into uncertainty. Whether in sickness or health, in lack or abundance, it is safest to remain in His presence. May we always recognize God as our source of peace and stability. Amen.
