HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN LENT

Isaiah 49:8-15, John 5:17-30

THEME: GOD’S GENERALS

As Christians we are called to be God’s general. We are meant to be his representatives on earth. We should be one with him though not in terms of authority but through our loving submission to his will and instructions. Through our submission to God, we become the people sent to reveal his plans in the world. It equally gives us the power to do his work.

The Lord Jesus made it clear in the gospel,

“I tell you most solemnly, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does himself, and he will show him even greater things than these, works that will astonish you.”

Unless we walk and work with God, we cannot have access to the goodness that comes from him. Therefore, in order to be God’s general, closeness to God is very important. This involves knowing how he has been working throughout human history and allowing him to work in us and through us and allowing him to show us the way. When we have gained his trust, he can confidently put his works in our care. Hence, all we need to do is to live lives that are worthy of his calling.

Jesus has shown us the way already. He does nothing without his Father’s approval. For this reason he said, “the son can do only what he sees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.” We can imitate Christ. This helps to judge our actions by God’s standard.

May we be filled with the special grace of closeness with God that we may be his witnesses wherever we go. Amen.
