Greatness is Measured by Humility

By Rev Fr. Ekeshiri Jude Emeka CSSP

HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR C
(MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE)
Text: Matthew 11:11-15

The world’s definition of greatness is tied towards conquest as against Jesus’s own definition of greatness. In the world, one who is able to show might and power is considered great.

But today the gospel tells us about a different form of greatness. It says, “I tell you solemnly, of all the children born of women, a greater than John the Baptist has never been seen; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is” (Matthew 11:11-15).

The birth of John the Baptist, describes to us a birth of someone who is to be great and Jesus praises John the Baptist for his great works. John the Baptist’s ministry is one of great humility and service. He told his followers that, ‘behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. I am not fit to untie His sandals. He must increase and I must decrease.’ Listening to these words of John the Baptist, makes me wonder if he was born of a woman. Because everyone born of a woman would want to be respected and to be looked upon as great, but, he chooses to give greatness to Jesus to whom greatness is due.

Jesus teaches us today that, to be considered great in the sight of God, we must be servant to everyone. Greatness is truly measured by humility, that is being servant to others rather than allowing them to serve us. Let us reflect today on the many times pride have overtaking us to see others as inferior and asked God to help us to serve others rather than to be served. Peace be with you.
