HOMILY, FRIDAY, 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
THE GUARDIAN ANGELS [MEMORIAL]
Job 38:1.12-21; 40:3-5, Luke 10:13-16
The best gratitude to God is a life well-lived.
The Lord said in our today’s gospel, “Woe to you Chorazin ! Woe to you Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago.” When we ignore God’s works in our lives, when we take his invitation for granted we may be courting disaster. God’s wonders are meant to bring us closer to him.
One of the best gifts of God to us is the presence of his angels. To each one God assigns an angel. The angels are meant to guide, direct and protect us. Hence, cooperating with our guardian angels is a prerequisite to a glorious life, because they will never lead us astray.
However, we must have special devotion to them. We must communicate with them in prayer and make aware that we are conscious and are appreciative of their presence. We are expected to implore their help in times of troubles or sought their guidance when we are at any crossroad in our lives. The Psalmist says in Psalms 91:11, “He has given his angels charge over, to guard you in all your ways.”
Let us watch our ways and live a life worthy of the angels call.
PRAYER
O Most angel of God, appointed by him to be my guardian, I give thee thanks for all the benefits which Thou hast ever bestowed on me in body and in soul. I praise and glorify thee that thou didst condescend to assist me with such patient fidelity, and to defend me against all the assaults of my enemies, Blessed be the hour in world thou wast assigned me for my guardian, my defender, and my patron. In acknowledgment and return of all thy loving ministries to me from my youth up, I offer thee the infinitely precious and noble heart of Jesus, and firmly propose to obey thee hence forthward, and most faithfully to serve my God. Amen.
