Prepare for the Lord’s Coming

Homily of the 2nd Sunday of Advent
By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp
Baruch 5:1-9, Philippians 1:4-6,8-11, Luke 3:1-6
THEME: Preparation for the Lord’s coming.

The Second Sunday of Advent focuses on preparation and repentance, symbolised by the lighting of the second candle, often called the “Bethlehem Candle.” Which symbolises faith and preparation.

On this day, we are remined of John the Baptist’s call to “prepare the way of the Lord” (Luke 3:4). He urges us to ready our hearts for Christ’s coming through spiritual renewal and turning away from sin. It is a time to deepen our faith and anticipate the joy of Christ’s birth.

The Lord Jesus seeks to dwell in hearts that are tidy for good works; hearts ready to embrace his call for a new lifestyle. The coming of the Lord ushers in a new era that can only be understood and recognised by those who have embraced the work of light.

Prophet Baruch said, “Jerusalem, take off your dress of sorrow and distress, put on the beauty of the glory of God for ever, wrap the cloak of the integrity of God around you, put the diadem of the glory of the Eternal on your head.” Baruch 5:1-9.

Praying for the Philippians, Paul said, “My prayer is that your love for each other may increase more and more and never stop improving your knowledge and deepening your perception so that you can always recognise what is best. This will help you to become pure and blameless, and prepare you for the Day of Christ, when you will reach the perfect goodness which Jesus Christ produces in us for the glory and praise of God.”

In our preparation for the coming of the Lord, we need one another. When we blend in love, we grow in the perfect knowledge of God who loves us ad always want to live among us. Our daily experience of one another increases our awareness of God.

May we always be prepared for the coming of the Lord. May our earthly preparation pave way for our heavenly inclusion in the eternal bliss of God. Amen.
