Service and the Simple Lifestyle

57

As heralds of Christ, we are called to empty ourselves to truly embody the simple lifestyle of the Lord. In the gospel, he puts before us in a plain term, one of the tenets of the religious life which is lived under the vow of poverty.  “Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals.” That is why one is asked to will out his property before first profession.

The Lord sent out seventy-two of his disciples in pairs to the places where he was to visit. This commissioning of Jesus carries profound lessons and reflections for us even today. It serves as a reminder of our responsibility to spread goodwill, peace, and the message of God. Wherever we go, we are reminded that we are Christ’s ambassadors. We are the heralds of Christ.

Rich harvest with thorns.

“The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few” Here, Jesus calls to join force with him in his mission of the world’s redemption. While we represent or work with Jesus, He makes us conscious of the possible challenges that we may face. Hence, he uses the metaphor of being sent out “like lambs among wolves” as a reminder of the vulnerability that can come with doing good in a sometimes harsh world. It teaches us to be bold and steadfast in the face of any form of pastoral hazards.

Service and the Simple life

More so, the Lord instructions, “carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals.” is a call to a life of humility and simplicity. It encourages us to rely on faith and the goodness of others. Hence, we must not get used to mistrust, and thus miss the generosity of those who are meant to support our mission here on earth. As a result of pride, many people have lost contact with those who are meant to be their benefactors.

The Lord does not want his disciples to play down on people’s hospitality. He said, stay in one place, and eat what is offered to you. This is an invitation to embrace the value of trust, community, and gratitude. It shows that we should be open to the kindness and support of others and be content with what we have.

We pray that in the effort to spread the gospel of Christ, we may be able to create community of love among all that we may meet. Amen.
