HOMILY OF MONDAY OF THE HOLY WEEK
Isaiah 42:1-7, John 12:1-11
THEME: THE MEASURE OF OUR LOVE
QUOTE: Authentic love can never be boring or faded because it has something new to offer each day.
Anytime we count God’s blessings in our lives, we shall realize that there is nothing too big to offer as token of our service to him. And the measure of our love for him is going to be seen in the intensity of the passion we put into his service.
In our today’s gospel, we read how, “Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; and the house was full of the scent of the ointment.”
Love does not count the cost. True love always thinks that there should be more to give. Love drives us to do greater. Authentic love can never be boring or faded because it has something new to offer each day.
Hence, time does not wait for anyone, whenever we are inspired to do any good work, we must not take it with levity or procrastinate. The opportunity may not come again. Jesus said to Judas when he complained that the costly ointment could be sold, and the proceeds given to the poor. “Leave her alone; she had to keep this scent for the day of my burial. You have the poor with you always, you will not always have me.” Jesus’ response simply implies that the time is coming when she may not have the chance to express herself this way. That was another way of announcing his death.
The extravagance in Mary’s show of love is a clear indication of her profound gratitude for Jesus. May our sense of appreciation be sharpened, and may we always show perfect love for Jesus through the way we carry out our daily tasks. Amen.
