HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE 34TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B 29TH OF NOVEMBER 2024
1st reading : Apocalypse 20:1-4,11-21:2
Psalm 83:3-6,8
Gospel : Luke 21:29-33
It is very easy for many in our generation to discredit the teachings of life after here, death, judgment, heaven, hell, or the kingdom of God. Consequently, we adopt the epicurean philosophy of eating and drinking, and tomorrow, we shall die.Consequently, we adopt the epicurean philosophy of eating and drinking, and tomorrow, we shall die.
However, some believed in the hear-after, but thought that it’s going to take a long time before it started. It is to such people that Jesus speaks in the gospel of today. Jesus reminds us again of the urgency to keep our houses clean, to keep our guard so that we might not be taken unaware.
He said in the gospel today that, “…when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
We must know that the call to the kingdom of God is a personal call that we must answer individually, and so, there’s never going to be a time when all the people on earth will die at once. We depart one after another just like we came into the world, and anybody can go first. This accounts for why Jesus stressed the fact that the kingdom is so near.
Many are experiencing the kingdom of God already, departing this world and going to meet whatever is beyond dependent on how well we lived on earth.
We must also know that our departure from this world happens indiscriminately, not minding who came into the world first or last, or who is old or young. Of course, experiences have shown us that.
We must, therefore, be ready at all times because we do not know the hour, for his words as He said shall not pass away.
Peace be with you 🙏🏾🙌🏾
