HOMILY, WEDNESDAY, 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
Job 9:1-12.14-16, Luke 9:57-62
God’s ways are not our ways. In our today’s first reading, Job refused to curse God, because he knew that God cannot err. It is just that we often find it difficult to understand how God operates.
In the gospel narrative, we see how Jesus teaches us that there are things which we must consider before we follow him.
Firstly, the Lord wants us to count the cost before we can follow him. He did not promise that all will always be pleasurable or smooth. “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.” It takes a responsible person to be a true Christian. Christianity does not promise bed of roses. There are both high and low moments in Christian living.
More so, Jesus taught us not to waste any moment of opportunity presented to us. Wherever the Lord lays something on my mind, we must not play with it or take it for granted. God’s invitation requires appropriate and timely response. The Lord said, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
Furthermore, the Lord tells us not live in the past but look up to where God is taking us to. “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” It is not enough enjoying past glories or looking to the good old days. We must listen to what God is saying to us at the moment, and follow what he still wants to achieve with or through us.

May the Lord who endowed St Jerome with a deep reverence for Holy Scripture, which he loved with all his heart sustain us ever more with his word and help us to find in it the source of life, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
