FAITH AND LOVE:  THE POWER TO BREAK BARRIERS.

36

HOMILY, WEDNESDAY 18TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

 Jer 31:1-7, Matthew 15:21-28.

The way in which our blessings are wrapped at times requires that will have an open mind, lest out of provocation, we throw it away.

The Canaanite woman, in her desperate need to have her possessed girl delivered, she approached Jesus. Jesus in turn confronted her with words which were enough to illicit anger or a sense of rejection in her. Yet, she was undaunted. Possessing the right mind, she did not misunderstand Jesus’ teasing words.

She was a gentile and she belonged to a stock which was an arch enemy of the Jews. Such barrier did not hold her from pressing for her need.

On the part of Jesus, he gave her a hand of welcome. Though his remark may sound somewhat belittling, it still  had a sense of cordiality.  The sense in which Jesus used the word dog was in loose sense, “Kunaria”  which simply refers to a pet dog as  different from a street dog. However, she pressed harder and she got what she wanted.

The Lord said, “It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs” She replied, “Yes Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”

Having seen how much she loved her daughter, Jesus helped her to develop her faith in him, not only as the Son of David, but as the Lord. From just making a request, she was helped into practicing an act of worship. She was cheerful and persistent.

Let us pray for the right attitude towards our life situations. When we are not negative in our approach towards the situation around us, we will get the best of them.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, fill my heart with your love. I want to break every barrier on the way to my life goal. Thy kingdom come.
