HOW TO BE PART OF THE NEW GENERATION

334

HOMILY, THURSDAY OF THE 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Saint Theresa of Avila [Memorial]

[Theresa was born in Avila [Spain] in 1515. She entered the Carmelites at the age of twenty, after some years of living as a mediocre religious, she resolved, with the grace of God, to pursue a life of intense holiness. Together with St John of the Cross, s he undertook the reform of the Carmelites. The Lord blessed her with mystical revelations and great faith to overcome the many trials and difficulties she encountered in her life. She wrote works of the highest doctrine and insights in to the spiritual life. She died at the age of sixty-seven in 1582.] Daily Missal.

Eph 1:1-10, Luke 11:47-54.

Evil handed over is consequences passed across. A virtue inherited is a line of fortune opened. We cannot inherit an action without inheriting the correspondent reaction.  When we inherit the sins of those who have gone before us, automatically we will share in the payment for their atrocities. The Lord said to the Pharisees,

“Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them and you built their tombs. Therefore also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some whom they will kill and persecute,’ that the blood of all the prophets, shed from  the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between  the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.”

Glory be to God, we are saved by grace. For when we disconnect ourselves from the dirty past of those who beget us and we walk into the light of Christ, we put on a new nature. “In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to teh riches of his grace which he lavished upon us.” with Jesus, we form part of a new generation of those born by grace.

Let us connect ourselves to Jesus, the true vine. Let us walk in his ways that we may not share in any form of generational curse in the line of our descent.

St Theresa was known for her work of reformation. Borrowing from her type of courage, may the Lord use us to reform our own generation that we may usher in fruits of joy and peace in our time. Amen.
