OUR BELIEF IN WHAT GOD CAN DO

797

HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR B

ST JOHN DAMASCENE
Born in Damascus of a Christian family in the latter part of the seventh century. He became a monk in the monastery of Saint Sabbas near Jerusalem and there was ordained priest. Proficient in philosophy, he wrote extensively about doctrine, especially against those who urged the destruction of sacred images. He died in the middle of the eighth century.

Isaiah 29: 17-24, Mathew 9:27-31

Unless we believe in what the Lord has said, we cannot believe in what we could do.

In our today’s first reading, Isaiah announced a new dispensation when all ugly situations will be reversed.”….in that the day the deaf shall hear words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see”

Consequently, while the two blind men followed Jesus in today’s gospel, he asked them, “Do you believe I’m able to do this? The said to him, yes Lord. Then he touched their eyes, saying, according to your faith let it be done to you. And their eyes were opened”

We cannot grow beyond our faith level. What we received is commensurate to our faith. We cannot grow as Christians without a corresponding growth in our faith. The more we believe in the power of God to save, the more we see testimonies to share.

May our faith grow. And may we never be weary. In whatever circumstance we find ourselves, may we always believe the might of God.
