1 Corinthians 3:18-23, Psalm 23:1-6, Luke 5:1-11
Faith is not an expression of the complexity of our beliefs. It is a simple expression of knowing what to expect from God.
Once again Jesus performed another miracle of the great catch, to show His authority as the Saviour and as a great provider. Jesus started first by teaching the people about the word of God, to build their faith. Jesus knew how frustrated the fishermen of Peter and his colleagues were, after fishing all night without catching any fish, then He proceeded to calm their worries.
The fishermen had gone out of their boats and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, it was Simon’s and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. Normally as a human being, one would expect Simon Peter and his colleagues to be angry and react rudely because of their frustrations all through the night.
But, when Jesus had finished speaking he said to Simon Peter, “put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.” ‘Master,’ Simon Peter replied, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point (Luke 5:1-11).
Peter here expresses a great conviction about Jesus, though he barely knows who Jesus was, but put out a show of a simple conviction. He said, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets. He just believed.
At this miracle of Jesus, Peter recognises his unworthiness. He said to Jesus, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made.
Most often, we do not recognise that, our state of being could prevent us from believing in what God could do for us. We need to constantly keep ourselves in a good state of pure humility and holiness of life.
At this point, it is safer to say that Jesus is the master provider. He knows all our troubles. He knows how frustrating life could become for us with our daily struggles and He is ready to help us.
He only want us to have faith in Him and throw our nets once more for a catch. As a believer, do not let the bigger troubles of life weigh you down. Do not let the waters of frustration take over your heart. Listen to Jesus and say, “just because you have said it, I believe in you Jesus” and you will be surprised at what you will see.
