HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR B
Jeremiah 23:5-8, Matthew 1:18-24
God always reveals his plans to his people. However, these plans can be fulfilled or can lead to the unity among them, only when they have the same mind or are all open to the prompting of his Spirit.
When Joseph was about to divorce Mary secretly, the angel came to him in his dream to convince him to take Mary as his wife. He said,
“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary you wife, for that which is conceive in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” [Cf Matthew 1:18-24]
When it necessary that another witness was required to testify to the means by which the Saviour was to come into the world, God deemed it necessary sending the angel to Joseph in his dream. If Joseph’s was not a man of virtue; if he has not opened himself to God, he wouldn’t have gotten the angelic message. Even if he gets it, he would have dishonoured it as mere malaria dream.
Hence, if we want the will of God to be done in our communities, we must all open ourselves to God that he may direct us as a family of one mind. We differ in thoughts; we often disagree on clear and important matters, because we do not share common experience or have common revelation of God.
May we be rid of all prejudice and malice that we may enjoy the free flow of God’s wisdom and as such enjoy the benefits of all that he has plan to achieve in our lives. Amen.
