Homily of Tuesday 32nd in the Ordinary Time of the year B. 12th November, 2024.
St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyrs
Text: Titus 2.1-8. 11-14, Luke 17:7-10
Dear friends in Christ, today we are presented with a gospel text that reminds us of who we are as Christians. We are simply servants of God. As servants of God, we do not mean slaves in chains. We mean humble instruments by which God carries out His mission on earth. At every level of our Christianity, we are servants. This is what distinguishes us from the political leaders of our society. They may want people to acknowledge them and rain all the eulogies on them. We are however not like that.
How then are we? We develop the mind of Christ who humbled himself to serve. When we eventually do what we are supposed to do, we do not wait for the praises. We do not allow the eulogies of people to swell our heads so as not to entertain pride and forget that we are simply doing what we are supposed to do. Christ therefore tells us that when we must have done what we are supposed to do and we are being praised for it, we simply say we are unworthy servants, we have only done our duty.
My dear friends in Christ, no one is actually worthy to be an instrument of God. We are only called by grace. Let us be more committed in what we do and in our various ways we serve God. This is what God will bless us with.
