Authority Makes the Difference

HOMILY OF TUESDAY, FIRST WEEK IN THE ORDINARY TIME,
TUESDAY 14th JANUARY, 2025
BY FR EMMANUEL AGHIDI CSSP
TEXTS: Hebrews 2:5-12, Mk 1:21b-28

In the gospel reading of today, we see how the people were amazed at Jesus’ teachings simply because he taught them with authority. They said, “This is a new teaching, not like that of the scribes.” The power of Jesus’ word was evident in how he commanded a demon to leave a young boy who was its host. There are a few things we could learn from this.

First, the word of God is not just a mere literature. It is not poetry or built on the ability for oratory. It is power. The authority in the word of God is what brings salvation and repentance. How do we preach the word of God? The authority therein is a product of the extent in which we first believe in the word of God that we preach.

Secondly, the unclean Spirit announced Jesus as the Holy one of God. But Jesus commanded him to keep quiet. Why this? We must not have a romance with demons. They are polluters. They can never intend good for anyone. They are enemies of God since they are coworker with the devil. As such, in the beginning of Jesus ministry, demons should not be those who would announce him to the world.

Dea friends, we must learn from Jesus not to have any romance with the devil. We must stop feeding from the tables of Satan. One who has redeemed us is Jesus the Lord as the first reading emphasizes.

May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Amen
The Lord be with you
