The Attitude of Jesus towards Imperfections

Homily of Wednesday, 3rd week of Lent.
Ref:Deut 4:1,5-9; Matt 5:17-19

Friends in Christ, in our reflection today we will briefly reflect on the attitude of Jesus towards the imperfections of his time.

We see in the Gospel text of today, how Jesus made known to his people that although the laws have been multiplied more than what was supposed to be and that it had become a burden on the people, he has not come to abolish the law, but to accomplish it. Jesus was often critical of the religious tradition to which he belonged. He had heated arguments with the religious leaders of his own tradition. Yet, he did not reject his own Jewish religious tradition, even though it was not perfect.

Jesus came to prune what needed pruning in his religious tradition and to bring what was good there to completion. Rather than abolish something because it was less perfect, Jesus ensured to bring the best out of it.

We have to learn this attitude of Jesus towards imperfection. We should ask ourselves, how do we react to the imperfections of our brothers and sisters? How do we react to the imperfections of our society? Friends, do know that our intolerance to the imperfections around us can blind us of the good that lies within.

Today, we are called to recognize “the good” wherever it is to be found even when it is hidden by other realities.

Peace be with you!
