HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY OF THE FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
Hebrew 12:4-7.11-15, Mark 6:1-6
THEME: GOD’S CHASTISING LOVE
Beneath and behind our today’s first reading is the understanding that God, our Father, is a loving God who wants the best for his children. He will never allow any kind of evil to happen to those who belong to him. However, he allows whatever challenges we may face in life for one purpose or the other. We become stronger when we scale through the huddles in our lives with the assurance of his abiding presence. And he expects us to pick all the lessons embedded in our life situations. As disciplined children, every life experience must make meaningful impact in our lives.
Moreover, our God is not a Father to weaklings. At times, he maintains silence while he remains present. Ours is to hold firm and not loose faith in him when it seems that he is not there. Nevertheless, whatever he allows is a discipline for our growth in maturity.
“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there who his father does not discipline? Heb 12; 5-7 “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” Heb 12:11.
Therefore, we must drop such questions like, “Why me” “Where is God when this happen?” God is present. At times, he makes his presence felt in his absence, for we often take his presence for granted.
May God loving presence never depart from us. May none of our experiences leave us without the corresponding tonic for a higher life, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
