Dear friends, in today’s gospel reading which is a continuation yesterday’s, Jesus tells us to love our enemies. He tells us that this would be the only distinguishing factor between us and the unbelievers. This is indeed a hard teaching. An enemy is someone who doesn’t want your good. He or she plots daily to pull you down and frustrate all your efforts in life. Such person may have even come physical with you. Yet Jesus says “Love your enemies.”
When I look at the happenings in our world today, say Nigeria for instance, the gruesome killing, the irrational oppression and destruction of loves and means of livelihoods, I wonder how we would effect this instruction of Jesus. How are we to love our enemies who kill and destroy us?
Dear friends, the Christian life is a very unusual life. It is different from the usual. It is a life of cross. To love our enemies, we must pray for their repentance. It is a tough time for us as Christians in the world currently. Drums of wars keep rolling and Christians seem to be helpless. It is a time to remind yourself that we are not helpless. We have the Holy Spirit with us. We can do bravely.
