TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS

48

HOMILY OF SATURDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

Genesis 3:9-24, Mark 8:1-10

THEME: TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS

Whether we shift blame or not, we will pay for all our actions. At the first fall, Adam did not take responsibility for his action. He shifted the blame to Eve. “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree and I ate” He not only shifted the blame, he was also trying to indict God. That is how charity can bite. Adam displayed a great sense of ingratitude, for God’s special gift to him. He was arrogant. Arrogant people often have allergic intolerance for the word, ‘sorry’. And it is clear that, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty before a fall. Proverb 16:18

Moreover, Eve, on her part, could not own her action; she equally transferred the blame to the serpent. Satan has nothing to lose, because he knows his fate already. If we like, we can shift all our blame to him a million time. He was the only one who did not argue with God. He knew that he was already on the ground. He no longer fear any fall.

However, those who shifted blame and the one who did not, they all paid for their actions. The price of obedience is golden and the cost of disobedience too high. It is only those who personally follow and understand the ways of the Lord that can cherish the difference.

More so, as the sin of Adam and Eve affected the human race, our faults can cause colossal damage for others. We must be cautious of our choice in life, so that we do not use our selfish desires to block the chances of those coming after us.

May the Lord help us to be responsible. May humility always be our cloak, that we may always follow the life path to life thorough Christ our Lord. Amen.
