-By Rev. Fr. Achilleus ile Adole CSSp.
1st reading: Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28
Responsorial: Psalm 104:16-21
Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43,45-46
The readings of today talks about one thing we must fight against especially this period of lent. That is, “hate”.
“Hate” is one thing that can make our christian life unrealistic if we do not watch against it. It can lead us into doing things that are not worthy of the name christian.
In the first reading, the brothers of Joseph developed hatred against him because of the love of their father. “…when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him….” This made them wanted to kill him but eventually sold him into slavery.
In the gospel, the chief priests and pharisees developed their hatred for Jesus because he told them the truth when he said that “… the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it….” This led them into seeking for a way to kill Jesus which they eventually did though it was all to the divine plan of God.
Anyone who harbour hatred in his heart is capable of committing any kind of evil without thinking twice. The brothers of Joseph sold him because of their hatred for him. And Jesus was eventually killed because the officials hated him for the truth he always told them. There could be some evil things we have already done as a result of our hatred for others, but we have an opportunity to re-write our records, to allow love to take its effect in our hearts rather than hate and live a better life as a christian.
May God bless his words in our hearts and make it fruitful and visible in our daily lives.
Peace be with you
