HOMILY OF THE FRIDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT
Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28, Matthew 21:33-43,45-46
THEME: HOW NOT TO BITE THE FINGER THAT FEEDS US
Behind all clash of opposites lies a balance. Envy and jealousy belong to those who have lost confidence in themselves. Their intention is to pull others down, forgetting that we all complement one another. The progress of a brother or a sister can open doors for our own success. Patience and hard work pave the way for those who believe in the realization of their destiny. If we are hopeless, or do not believe in our own ability, we can ignorantly or out of sheer jealousy fight those meant to lead us to our destiny.
Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery just to kill his dreams. They never knew that he would later become their rescuer even in the land of slavery. Their evil deed speedily led him to the actualization of God’s plan in his life.
We shouldn’t be discouraged when people despise us on account of our edge over them. Every negative reaction to our success should be seen as something that will lead to our growth. Although those who seek our downfall will definitely be proved wrong, our efforts should not meant to be geared towards proving a point to our enemies, because God did not bless us so we could become proud.
In the gospel narratives, Jesus told us the parable of the wicked tenants who killed and maltreated all the messengers sent by the owner of the vineyard. They were greedy and wanted to own the vineyard which didn’t not belong to them. He used the parable to show the stubbornness of the scribes and pharisees, who stood against him. They never knew he was the expected messiah. They took to opposing him. And he told them, “
“It was the stone rejected by the builders.
that became the keystone.
This was the Lord’s doing.
and it is wonderful to see?”
Let us pray that we do not fight what we are called to stand for and may we not lose our lives due to lack of knowledge. Amen.
