THE SECRET OF TRUE PROSPERITY, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua, CSSp

61

HOMILY OF THURSDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK IN LENT

Jeremiah 7:23-28, Luke 11:14-23

THEME: THE SECRET OF TRUE PROSPERITY

QUOTE: “Despite knowing God’s purpose for our life, we need a daily and constant journey with him to ascertain how he plans to achieve those purposes in us and through us.”

“Follow right to the end the way that I mark out for you, and you will prosper.”

The above passage from the first reading is a simple secret to prosperity; that is, knowing our unique purpose and being consistent in our efforts to achieve it. We cannot truly succeed in life unless we know God’s purposes and plans for our life. Despite knowing God’s purpose for us, we need a daily and constant journey with him to ascertain how he plans to achieve those purposes in us and through us.

He said, “follow right to the end”. We must not be discouraged when it seems we are not getting it right. But it will be disastrous if we walked the wrong path outside his will for us. our hearts can deceive and mislead us if we are not careful because the human heart has the ability to be drawn towards flashy things, which in the long run might not serve life’s purpose. Care must be taken to know exactly where we can be valuable. True to God’s nature, he keeps reaching out to us every day, and every moment to set our feet on the right path. It is left for us to be awakened to his constant call. He said,

“But they did not listen, they did not pay attention; they followed the dictates of their own evil hearts, refused to face me, and turned their backs on me. From the day your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until today, day after day I have persistently sent you all my servants the prophets.”

Man’s inability to see God’s footprint is evident in today’s gospel, when the people attributed Jesus’s miracle to Beelzebub, the prince of the devil. The demonstrations of God’s power in Jesus were enough evidence of God’s presence in the world, but they could not recognize it.

Nevertheless, while we should not get lost in the rush for fake prophets who mimic God’s servants, we should not forget that we cannot adapt to our own unique destiny without following the dictates of God who controls everything.

May his words be boldly written in our hearts and may his voice be distinct in our ears through Christ our Lord. Amen.
