RESIGNING TO DIVINE INITIATIVE, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

31

HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Genesis 17:1,9-10,15-22, Matthew 8:1-4

THEME: RESIGNING TO DIVINE INITIATIVE

The phrase “not too late” echoes as a melodic anthem sung by those who steadfastly walk the path of righteousness, placing unwavering trust in the Lord, who faithfully upholds His covenant.

Abraham maintained steadfastness in his journey alongside God, resulting in a covenant being established when he got to the age of 99. Despite faltering momentarily by succumbing to Sarah’s advice and fathering Ishmael with Hagar, it was God’s intention for His covenant to be fulfilled through Abraham’s wife, Sarah, who miraculously conceived at the remarkable age of 90.

God is never too late.

In the gospel, the leper who came to Jesus for healing said, “Sir, if you want to, you can cure me.’ Though he bracketed social distance and forced his way to Jesus’ presence, he did not force himself on Jesus. He resigned to divine initiative. And Jesus did not hesitate to grant him instant healing.

Let us pray that we may have the patience to wait on God whose time is the best.

May his will be our peace. Amen.
