HOMILY OF TUESDAY IN THE 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
Genesis 19:15-29, Matthew 8:23-27
THEME: WHEN GOD IS INVOLVED.
Sometimes, what we perceive as problems can actually serve as our means of evading imminent peril. If we understand God’s way, we will realize that he always watches over those who do his will. The losses we experience in the present may be very small in comparison to the dangers that God is safeguarding us against.
When God was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah on account of their iniquity, he instructed Lot and family to flee the towns. If Lot had defied God’s instruction and stayed back in Sodom and Gomorrah because of his estate there, he would have perished. Unfortunately, his wife looked back and turned into a pilar of salt.
There is a tendency to be too comfortable with the present that we lose sight of the beauty of the next moment. God is taking us somewhere.
Moreover, in the storming wind that rolled the sea, Jesus was far asleep in the boat, until the disciples woke him and said,” ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down” He didn’t just calm their fear, he equally calm the sea. They never knew that they were dealing with God himself, and they exclaimed, “Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.”
In and out of season, God is with us. We simply need to be conscious of his presence. This helps us to face every challenge and understand their significance for our way forward.
May our courage be built on God providence. May protecting shield continue to be over us. Amen.
