HUMBLE BEGINNING: THE NEED FOR A NICHE, By Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY IN THE 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Genesis 41:55-57,42:5-7,17-24, Matthew 10:1-7

THEME: HUMBLE BEGINNING: THE NEED FOR A NICHE

Jack of all trade makes one a master of none. When we do not concentrate our attention on a little we can achieve at a time, we may not be able to manage the much we desire. Having a niche helps us to achieve effectiveness in our chosen vocation or endeavours.

Jesus came to save the whole world, but we see him in today’s gospel instructing the twelve disciples, “Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.”

The disciples’ scope was limited by the Lord, considering their level of experience. He intended to prevent them from taking on more than they could handle. Considering Israel’s personal history with God, reaching out to them might not have been as challenging for the disciples as it would have been with other nations. This was not a prejudice against the gentiles, because Jesus would be seen later ministering to them by himself. He ministered to the Samaritan woman. {John 4:4-42}. He healed the daughter of Syro-Phoenician woman. {Matt 15:28}. And he would later commissioned Paul to be apostle to the gentiles.

We need to humble so that we don’t take too many activities that will not allow us to be proficient in what we do.

May God gives us the grace to be with him always to know how we go about our daily responsibilities.  Amen
