A BODY FIT FOR HEAVEN, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

29

HOMILY OF TUESDAY IN THE 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Apocalypse 11:19,12:1-6,10, 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, Luke 1:39-56

THEME: A BODY FIT FOR HEAVEN

Jesus the Lord ascended into heaven. The Assumption of Mary is the belief that she was taken body and soul into the glory of heaven.

The church is the body of Christ with Christ as the head. Mary as the Mother of Christ is the Mother of the Church; “Mater Ecclesia” Her assumption has an implication for the church; that the church is holy and heavenly and that no earthly corruption can mar her, as the Lord said, The gate of hades can never prevail against the church.

A note from Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body is a profound teaching on human dignity, sexuality, and the meaning of life, that emphasize the sacredness of the human person, whole and entire.

Tapping our spiritual sustenance from the church, we must remember that our destination is heaven. Hence, like Mary, we must preserve ourselves as holy vessels for God’s acceptance.

May our lives be worthy of heaven. Amen.
