TRINITY OF LOVE

75

HOMILY, SOLEMNITY OF THE HOLY TRINITY

Exodus 34:4b-6.8-9,2Cor 13:11-13, Gospel John 3:16-18.

The Blessed Trinity reveals the special love of God. The Lord God communicated himself through his Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

“After Jesus was baptised, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’” Matthew 3:16-17

The question, “where is the Trinity in the Bible” is answered by the above passage. Here, we hear God the Father speaking as God the Holy Spirit descended upon God the Son in form of a dove.

Moreover, the Blessed Trinity does not imply three Gods in one, but three persons in one God. God the Father, out of his special love for us sent his Son into the World to save us. On leaving the World, God the Son promised us the Holy Spirit, who would continue to be driving force of God’s presence in our midst.

Being sent.

There is a no true love without communication. And in communication, both the sender and the sent cannot be different. The sent delivers the message of the sender. And the receiver must understand and respond appropriately. Jesus did nothing of his own without recourse to his Father who sent him. “I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.” John 6:38

Jesus consulted the Father even before he mounted the courage to go and pick up the cross. There the Father spoke on the mountain of transfiguration “while he was still speaking, a bight cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, this is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him.”Matthew 17: 5.  The mission of the Blessed trinity is complete the moment we received the message of God’s love and we respond to it appropriately.

Moreover, God is Spirit. He made us in his image. We are equally spirit, inhabiting the body, and our body-mind relation defines the state of our soul.  Like Jesus, in whatever capacity we act, we must ask, whether we are merely acting out own mind or we are representing God who communicates his will to us in the art of our souls. Since we are not our own, we cannot act on our own. To act on our own is death. It means we have been cut off from our source. That was what sin did to humanity and Jesus came to reconnect us. He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear fruit, because without me you can do nothing” John 15:6

We may asked, “Can someone be sent and not aware?” I pray that, as a result of sin, the devil will not get the upper part of us. When we yield ourselves constantly to sin, when we continuously think, talk and act against the will of God, the thief will simply come in to be the sender. Since he is a thief, he hides his identity behind veil of darkness and communicates himself through whoever has submitted his or her will to him. The Holy Spirit is the Lord of light. He will always make us aware of the presence of God and his will for us.

Thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adorned and glorified, who has spoke through the prophets.  He communicates the will of God to us. He helps to live according to God’s dictates.  He constantly connects us to our root, that we may always live a Trinitarian life. That is a life of union, a life of communion, a life of fellowship. Hence, Paul prayed,

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” 2Cor. 13:13

We share in the Trinitarian life by following the ways of love and given by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by connecting ourselves to the Holy Spirit who continues to manifest the power of God in us and through us. We sustain this life by our sharing in the life of the community of believers and by our communion with the Holy Spirit in our day to day living. We are called to be peace-loving.

As we submit ourselves to God’s love, as we make ourselves agent of unity, as we represent the presence of God in our day to day living, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit always be with us. Amen.

PRAYER

O Lord, I love you. May your love always be with me. May I perfectly represent you in all my ways. Guide my steps and show me your will. Thy kingdom come.
