WHAT WE HAVE

131

We are what we have. What we have is not necessarily our material possession but the fruits of our life. The best of wealth is the testimony of a good life. The Lord said, “man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.” This was a response to the man who came to him, requesting that he tells his brother to give him a share of his inheritance.

The Lord narrated the parable of a rich man with a bountiful harvest who decided to hoard his wealth, building bigger barns to store it all. He planned to relax and enjoy life. However, God called him a fool, as his life will be taken that very night, leaving his stored riches behind.

We are reminded to prioritize spiritual wealth over earthly possessions. Wealth without the testimony of a good life is useless. Our riches will be judged by the testimonies of the people around us. We cannot swim in abundance while the people around us are in lack. Even if we share our property with them, there is still something greater than material possession. A virtuous life is the ultimate. There is no point building an unbridled appetite for material acquisition, without the wisdom that comes from above.

Hence, we need the spirit of God to direct our daily affairs. May we always be intent on storing treasures for ourselves in heaven. May our lives never be cut short because of reckless living. Amen.
