HOMILY, WEDNESDAY, 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
Hosea 10:1-3.7-8.12, Matthew 10:1-7
THE BANQUET GIFT: Wealth without God produces a fool. Knowledge without fear of God produces an idolater. A true Christian is the one who though rich, constantly seeks the face of God.
“In his riches, man lacks wisdom. He is like the beasts- they perish.” Psalm 49:21
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And knowledge of the Holy One understanding.” Proverbs 9:10
“Those who choose other gods, their sorrow will increase.” Psalms 16:4
“A fool said in his heart, there is no God. Their deeds are loathsome and corrupt” Psalms 14:1
In today’s first reading, the prophet Hosea proclaimed,
“Israel is a luxuriant vine that yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased the more altars he builds; as his country improved he improved his pillars. Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The Lord will break down their altars, and destroy their pillars. For now they will say: we have no king, for we fear not the Lord.” Hosea 10: 1-3
Jesus has made us his friends. Do we follow his path when we are doing well, or we only seek his face and follow his ordinances when things are bad? We cannot be fair weather friends. In God’s presence, we have a clearer view of life and we enjoy the peace that the world cannot give. There is no point gathering wealth while we are not in tune with the giver. It will only produce endless struggles for survival. In the Lord alone is our souls at rest.
PRAYER
O Lord, you love me and I know. May I always be with you, that I may be a preacher of your way.
