THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING GOD’S WORD

HOMILY, THURSDAY, 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Jer 2:1-3:14-17, Matthew 13:18-23

The word of God is made only for the elect, those who make themselves fertile for his good tidings of salvation. These days only a few give ample time for the word of God. The issues of life and the rush for survival have prevented many from seeing the hidden power of the word of life, which is the lamp to our feet and a light unto our path. Psalms 119:105

There are people who are too prejudiced to listen to the word of God. They make themselves so unteachable, either because of pride or are not ready to face the truth that will challenge their life styles. Some are too low in understanding and cannot grasp the word. And some are too busy that they cannot have time to reflect on what they heard. They could hear, but do not listen. The ears hear. It is the mind that listens. May minds not grow dull.

However, the word of God is for people who are ready to take the responsibilities for it. We must be ready to take it to heart and allow it to bear fruit in our lives.

Let us make ourselves worthy of the word of God. Let us welcome it with open heart.

Blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

PRAYER

O Lord! Help that nothing will cover my mind. May every word that you have sown into my life yield its fruits in abundance. Grant that I may savour your word, that no human engagement may deprive me of the blessings which your word bestow. Thy kingdom come.
