AN APPRECIATIVE LOVE: LOVE BEYOND THE GRAVE

42

HOMILY, WEDNESDAY, 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

ST MARY MAGDALENE [FEAST]

Songs of Solomon 3:1-4ab or 2 Cor 5:14-17, John 20:1-2.11-18

If we had really encountered Jesus concretely, our life should be a life of appreciation for God’s marvelous love. If we actually appreciate the love of God, we must know that we have no claim on him. Rather, we are indebted to him for his merciful love. If we remember the goodness of God, we must ever be grateful.

For the love that Jesus shown Mary Magdalene, having delivered her from the clutches of Satan and made her a disciple, she never ceased following him, even beyond the grave.

One may ask, what has she to do with the body already laid in the tomb? Why did she come to the grave to look for Jesus? She loved much. And her love was very deep. Her love was an appreciative love and not a utility love.

Dear beloved,

Don’t give up on your loved ones if you truly love.

I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and the in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but found him not. The watchmen found me, as they went about in the city. Have you seen him whom my soul loves? Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my soul loves.” Song of Solomon 3:2-4

Don’t love for what you stand to gain. Love, even when your loved one is not forthcoming. Don’t despise your loved ones in times of trouble, when it seems all hope is lost

“Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, because they have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid him. Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him. Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus Said to her, Mary.” Jn20:13-16

For her love, she was the first to experience the resurrection. She met her Lord. And her joy was full.

If we want people to show us love, we must strive to show them love first. We must have something to offer. For Jesus, he offered himself. He is worthy of our ultimate search.  Nobody is ready to waste his or her time on people whose life add nothing to their existence. Jesus has it all.

PRAYER

O Lord Jesus, for the love you have shown me, for dying for me, may my entire life be lived for you. All I am is yours. Yours I am and yours I want to be. Do with me whatever you will.
