BEYOND FLESH AND BLOOD, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

39

HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE 9TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Tobit 11:5-17, Mark 12:35-37

THEME: BEYOND FLESH AND BLOOD

We are defined more by what we are, by our purpose in the world or our office, not necessarily by our descent. Even though the land of our birth or our family root may have a bearing on us, what God has ordained to do with us is the ultimate.

Hence, we must not allow the world to limit our possibilities by their judgement about our earthly root.

In today’s gospel, while teaching in the Temple, Jesus questioned how the scribes could claim the Christ to be David’s son. He quoted David, who referred to the Christ as his Lord. Though his descent is traced to the house of David, he is the king of kings. His kingdom is not of this world. He would not allow himself to be limited by the low expectations of the Jews who were expecting a champion who was coming to rebel against the government of the day.

We must not allow ourselves to be wired by public opinions. Flowing with what is in vogue may blur the vision of our identity.

May the Lord help us to know who we are. May he help us to understand our identity so as not to miss our mission on earth. Amen.
