HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY OF THE OF THE SIXTH WEEK OF EASTER
Acts 17:15,22-18:1, John 16:12-15
THEME: BUILDING SPIRITUAL CAPACITY
To have effective communication, we must know our audience. This helps to know how best to get their attention and thereby pass our message accordingly. We need to consider their age, educational background, culture, mindset, state of mind and history.
Paul, before the council of Areopagus, tried to explain the faith in a way familiar to the people, but they made him a laughingstock the moment he began to talk about the resurrection of the dead. This was because, it was foreign to their belief system. They needed a leap into a higher level of understanding.
Hence, Jesus told the disciples in today’s gospel,
“I still have many things to say to you. but they would be too much for you now. But when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth.”
It is only spiritual people who can understand spiritual things. Jesus knew the capacity of the disciples to contain the mysteries of God. He knew their level of understanding. That was why he assured them of the promised Holy Spirit, who will endow them with the power of proper understanding of the words of God.
Let us earnestly hunger for the company of the Holy spirit in our daily lives that we may understand the immeasurable greatness of God’s power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might which he accomplished in Christ. Amen.
