HOMILY, TUESDAY OF THE 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
1 Kings 17:7-16, Gospel Matthew 5:13-16
THEME: A CALL TO SHINE
Something can be good but not attractive. Our good works must possess a quality that draw people. Though we are not meant to do good to get attention from others, the manner in which it is performed, the graciousness that accompanies it must possess a kind of magnetism which compels people to appreciate it.
However, we are not the one to trumpet that our deeds are good. People must see and tell us. We cannot fake goodness. No matter how much we pretend to be good, our real character must surely come out. With time, people will get to know whether it is intrinsically part of us or not.
“As Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant in his hands, he did not know that the skin of his face had become radiant while he spoke with the Lord”. [Exodus 34: 29]. The radiance on Moses face was the product of his encounter with God. Moses did not know. It was the people who observed it. Our actions must flow from the active power of God that is working in us. People should see us and see the radiance of God’s glory in our life style.
Moreover, when we tarry with God, when we allow his words to take flesh in us, we would be transformed and become objects of attraction. For “In God’s light we see light.”[Psalm 36:9] The radiance of God’s glory comes into light in us when we enter into perfect fellowship with him.
More so, in order to ignite the spiritual conduit that brings out the glory of God in us, we are expected to intensify our prayer life. We are called to spend time with God so that he may strengthen us and transform us into his perfect image. “While Jesus was praying, his face changed in appearance and his clothing because dazzling white” (Luke 9:29). Seeing the transfigured Jesus, Peter could not hold himself than to say, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” Luke 9:33.
Hence, we repeat the words of Jesus,
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven,” Matthew 5:16
PRAYER
O Lord God, in your infinite goodness, give me more of you. Penetrate my innermost being that my life may reflect your light and radiate your heavenly fragrance. Clothe me with the virtues which attract people to savour your greatness. May my lifestyle give glory to your name. Thy kingdom come.
