DELIVERANCE FROM CRIPPLING FEAR

HOMILY, TUESDAY 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Amos 3:1-8; 4:11-12, Matthew 8:23-27

What we know can either make us or unmake us. The ignorance of who we are or of what we have can cast a shadow of death on us. If we lack faith, whatever looks like death will always send us into panic. Knowing our potential and the arsenals at our disposal, we can stand tall in the face of seeming crippling situations.

Experience has taught the disciples of Jesus that the storm in the sea can be destructive. They were afraid. And they shouted, “Save us Lord; we are perishing”

There was another kind of experience which they lack. They did not know what being with Jesus mean. They did not know the calming presence of Jesus. Though they begged him to save them, they were still afraid. They were afraid in the presence of their Saviour.

Fear can poison our faith. At times, the content of our prayers simply show how fearful we are. They often do not reflect our trust in the power of God to save. It is not about praying to God all the time, but by believing that he will grant our request. Without faith we cannot receive from God. James 1:7

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the words of Christ.” Roman 10:17. Our strength in the Lord is hinged on our understanding of his word. We must move on the strength of the power of his word.

God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. Thus we do not fear, though earth should be shaken and mountains quake to the depth of the sea, though its water rage and foam and mountains totter at its surging.” Psalm 45(46)2-4.

PRAYER

O Lord, I know that you do not give me the spirit of fear. Rather, the spirit of power, love and sound mind. Enlighten my mind by your word that I may always believe that you are always with me a ready help. Thy kingdom come. Amen.
